OpenAI Unveils Faster, More Efficient Chip

OpenAI has unveiled its new chip, called "Galapeno," which outperforms current Nvidia processors in terms of both performance and energy efficiency, especially during AI inference. It delivers higher performance for AI operations while consuming less power—around 700 watts—contributing to lower operating costs for data centers. The company plans to begin using the chip to support its models later this year as part of its strategy to build its own infrastructure, despite the chip still being in development. It is primarily designed for inference rather than training and heavily relies on collaboration with Broadcom.
