Europe aims to seize Russian assets for Ukraine

Governments within the European Union, including Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland, are encouraging Brussels to reconsider the use of frozen Russian sovereign assets to fund support for Ukraine, in an effort to address a potential funding crisis. Plans to utilize more than 200 billion euros of Russian Central Bank assets held in escrow were halted last year due to opposition from Belgium, which fears legal repercussions, Russian retaliation, and risks to financial markets. This call comes at a time when the European Union is discussing its future budget funding, with the possibility of including additional support for Ukraine as part of its resources. The Swedish Foreign Minister stated that utilizing frozen assets is a fair and intelligent way to support Ukraine and protect Europe.
