Walmart Resolves Pharmacy Lawsuit

Walmart has reached a settlement with the U.S. government to resolve a lawsuit accusing it of contributing to the worsening of the opioid crisis in the United States, due to dispensing illegal prescriptions through its pharmacies since 2013. The financial terms of the settlement have not yet been disclosed, but the Department of Justice had previously stated that the company violated drug regulation laws, which could expose it to billions of dollars in fines. Walmart has affirmed that it is pleased to have reached this resolution and continues to support pharmacists and patient care, even as two major lawsuits concerning the role of pharmacies in the opioid crisis remain ongoing. The crisis has resulted in the deaths of over 905,000 people between 1999 and 2025. This settlement represents the latest in a series of government actions holding companies accountable for their role in the widespread opioid epidemic.
