Icelanders reject EU membership
Voters in Iceland rejected the resumption of accession negotiations with the European Union by a margin of 52.8% to 47.2%. This reflects the majority's desire to protect fisheries and national sovereignty, and to avoid risking them. The Prime Minister confirmed that the vote would halt discussions on accession, and that the government would continue its work as usual, despite Iceland having submitted its application to join in 2009 and having suspended negotiations in 2013.
