Britain announced sanctions against individuals and entities involved in the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including a ban on importing goods from these settlements, in response to a settlement project in the "E1" area that threatens to divide the West Bank and obstruct the future existence of a Palestinian state. Countries such as Canada, France, Norway, and others joined in supporting restrictions on trade with the settlements. In return, Israel closed the British consulate in East Jerusalem and expelled British diplomats. Additionally, the British Prime Minister informed President Trump before the announcement, and the latter did not oppose the sanctions, despite U.S. concerns over Netanyahu's policies in the West Bank.
