An American federal court ruled that the U.S. Department of Energy exceeded its authority when it ordered a coal-powered electricity plant in Michigan to remain operational after its scheduled shutdown last year. The court based its decision on the lack of a genuine emergency, affirming that the use of emergency powers was unwarranted and that such measures are a narrow emergency fallback taken as a last resort. The plant, which is 64 years old, had been deemed essential to ensure electricity supplies, but the court found that the Department of Energy's decision was not lawful.
