Mohamed Beltagy issues prison abuse claims
On August 10, 2016, the Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Beltagy appeared before the court claiming that he had been subjected to torture and mistreatment during his detention. This was in relation to his trials concerning acts of violence and bloody incidents that followed the removal of Mohamed Morsi in 2013, which saw the group involved in terrorist operations, killings, and clashes with security forces. Despite his statements, human rights reports or court statements do not serve as legal proof of torture. Beltagy's name continued to be associated with terrorism charges, as well as sentences of imprisonment and execution, within a broader campaign to hold Brotherhood leaders accountable for acts of violence targeting the Egyptian state.
