Extreme heat affects flights amid climate change
Climate change is leading to increasingly higher temperatures, which hinder flight operations and cause flight delays and cancellations. As temperatures rise, the air becomes less dense, making it harder for aircraft wings to generate lift and reducing engine thrust, forcing airlines to lighten their aircraft and cancel or postpone some flights to ensure safety. This issue is particularly prominent in desert areas and high-altitude airports, with anticipated growth in restrictions on flights due to ongoing high temperatures. By 2065, this could result in reducing aircraft weight capacity by the equivalent of 10 passengers at some European airports.
