The Libyan political parties signed an agreement under the auspices of the United Nations aimed at holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya within 24 months, with the goal of ending the ongoing political divide that has persisted for years. The agreement specified addressing disagreements over election laws and reforming the National Elections Commission, with a set timeframe for approval by the House of Representatives and the State Supreme Council. In the event of failure, the agreement would be adopted at the national level with the support of the Security Council. This step comes after years of political stalemate and the collapse of the scheduled 2021 elections, amid concerns that political disagreements might hinder the implementation of the agreement and the successful conduct of elections.
