Philadelphia tests colorful streets to lower heat

As a result of rising temperatures and increasing heatwaves, the city of Philadelphia has experimented with a new approach to combat the urban heat island phenomenon by coating road surfaces and pavements with light-colored, reflective paints instead of traditional black asphalt. The application began in the Hunting Park neighborhood in 2024, aiming to reduce sidewalk heat and improve residents' comfort. The results showed that the painted pavement was relatively cooler during the daytime, although its impact on air temperature was limited. Further studies are needed to assess its effectiveness and durability, especially in humid climates and winter conditions. Despite early durability issues with the initial layer, the city applied an additional thicker layer in August 2025, focusing on evaluating how successful this technique is in lowering temperatures and providing greater comfort for residents amid ongoing rising temperatures.
