UN: Nearly 20 million children abused in a year

UNICEF has reported that approximately 20 million children aged 12 to 17 were subjected to various forms of exploitation and sexual abuse through technology within a single year in 21 countries. Over 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, and more than 9 million were coerced into engaging in conversations or sharing sexual images. Additionally, sexual images of 4 million children were shared without their consent. The organization confirmed that the majority of these cases occurred on social media platforms and emphasized that the psychological impact on children is profound, increasing the risks of suicidal thoughts and anxiety. The report urged for enhanced security measures on digital platforms, improved legal frameworks, effective support for children who have been abused, and efforts to address the exploitation stemming from economic and social vulnerabilities.
