Members of the Libyan House of Representatives elected Saleh Abdul Nabi Al-Obaidi as the new Chairman of the Council. This step came more than 12 years after Aguila Saleh assumed the presidency of the parliament. Al-Obaidi, a civil engineer and a representative of the city of Bayda, belongs to the Al-Obaidi tribe, from which Aguila Saleh also hails, and has experience in parliamentary committees and communication with Turkey. This election took place amid disagreements within the council regarding the management of the presidency and its internal regulations. The majority of deputies voted to amend the rules and form a new presidium, despite Aguila Saleh’s objection, who considered the session to be illegal.
