Fava Beans Between Trees
Dr. Adel El-Garhy, head of the Legume Crops Research Department, recommended planting fava beans between young mango and citrus trees to boost local production and generate additional income. The winter crop can also help protect the trees from the cold. Average yields range from 10.5 to 11 ardebs per feddan, and can rise to 15 or 16 ardebs when technical recommendations are followed. At around 6,000 Egyptian pounds per ardab, that would bring in gross revenue of 90,000 or 96,000 pounds, respectively, before costs.
