Aswan's Botanical Isle
Aswan’s Botanical Island has prepared for the winter season by maintaining its paths and benches and replanting some of its plants. Spanning 18 feddans, it is home to around 850 varieties of trees and perennial and rare plants. During a tour, its director, Amr Mahmoud, explained that the island is divided into seven sections, containing 85 plant families, 250 genera and 380 species. These include tropical fruit plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, and timber and oil-producing trees. The island has welcomed prominent international figures, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Josip Broz Tito and Queen Elizabeth. It has also become a destination for the study of geology and biology.
