Adam Hamawy is an American surgeon of Egyptian descent. Born in Egypt and raised in New Jersey, he served as a physician in the U.S. Army from 2003 to 2011. He won the seat representing New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District in the House of Representatives, receiving about 74.8% of the vote, compared with 25% for his Republican opponent, Greg Mele. He became the first Muslim to represent New Jersey in Congress and the first Egyptian American elected to the House.
