Jeffries nears House role
Hakeem Sekou Jeffries, born in Brooklyn in 1970, is a Democratic representative from New York and his party’s leader in the House of Representatives since 2023, following a legislative career that began in the New York State Legislature. He moved closer to becoming Speaker after Democrats regained their majority in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections. If formally elected by the House in January 2027, he will become the first African American to hold the position. Jeffries is one of Donald Trump’s leading opponents and, in 2020, served on the Democratic team that presented the case for the president’s impeachment to the Senate.
