Businessman Naguib Sawiris defended Abdulrahman El-Sayed, known as Abdoul, amid accusations that he is affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. He said the important thing was that Abdoul is “an Egyptian—smart, tough, and witty—and that he won fair and square.” Sawiris’s comment came after a video circulated showing an exchange in which a voter asked Abdoul about his ties to the group. Abdoul responded by declaring that he disavowed it. Abdoul had won a seat in the U.S. Senate representing Michigan, defeating Republican Mike Rogers and becoming, according to the article, the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of Congress.
