The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, known as “Big E” and the world’s first nuclear-powered carrier, has begun its final voyage to Alabama, where it is to be dismantled and scrapped. Commissioned in 1961 and decommissioned in 2012, it served for more than five decades, taking part in the Vietnam War and operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. It could not be turned into a museum because of security and technical concerns stemming from the similarity of its design to that of nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carriers.
