Egyptian military spokesperson Ahmed Osman Ali said that illegal gold prospectors in the Eastern Desert possessed weapons including heavy machine guns, anti-aircraft weapons, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and sniper rifles. He made the remarks while presenting the results of the first phase of a campaign against illegal prospecting. He added that these activities were linked to the possession of unlicensed weapons and ammunition, as well as other crimes, and to clashes between armed groups seeking to control prospecting areas.
