New defence secretary secures £1.5bn for drone funds
The UK defense secretary secured an additional £1.5 billion in funding, primarily to expand drone capabilities, reducing an £18 billion funding gap and enabling increased investment. The funds were obtained through negotiations with the Treasury and other government departments, allowing the defense plan to move forward despite past disagreements. The funding will support new equipment, including uncrewed speedboats for deployment in the Strait of Hormuz, and the building of six hybrid air defense frigates to replace existing destroyers.
