Asylum seekers to contribute £10,000 for costs
A new UK law proposes that asylum seekers pay around £10,000 to cover their living costs or face denial of settled status. The scheme, included in the immigration and asylum bill, is criticized by charities as unfair and potentially harmful to refugees fleeing persecution. Less than 15% of refugees are expected to earn enough to contribute, and the scheme could discourage work or settlement, while the exact thresholds will be determined later.
