US-Saudi Nuclear Deal Explained
The US and Saudi Arabia have announced a 30-year deal to establish a civilian nuclear program with American technology and expertise, aimed at meeting Saudi energy needs and boosting oil exports. The agreement includes plans for a uranium enrichment facility, raising concerns about potential nuclear proliferation and regional arms races, especially since oversight measures are less stringent than previous agreements. Critics warn that the deal could enable Saudi Arabia to develop nuclear weapons, but US officials deny this risk, emphasizing safeguards and oversight. The deal's future approval in Congress may face opposition due to regional security concerns.
