Researchers have examined the remains of an 11th-century man buried in Barton-upon-Humber, known as Conquest Man, revealing he had Scandinavian origins and significant continental ancestry. While his grave is in a pre-Norman church cemetery, his DNA and skull shape suggest he was likely from Scandinavia rather than a Norman or Saxon. The findings indicate he grew up in a Viking-influenced region and may have arrived in England through Scandinavia or the North Sea area, but it is unlikely he was part of the Norman army that invaded in 1066. The study challenges traditional narratives of the Norman Conquest by suggesting a more complex movement of peoples during that period.
