Offenders guilty of manslaughter, rape, child sexual abuse, and grooming will no longer be eligible for early release following a government U-turn prompted by political pressure. The decision, affecting approximately 1,400 prisoners, aims to prevent the release of offenders involved in high-profile cases, including a police officer killed responding to a theft. Critics warn that this move could exacerbate prison overcrowding and undermine ongoing reforms, with officials emphasizing the need to avoid risking prison system collapse.
