Kākāpō population grows to 90 chicks
The population of the critically endangered kākāpō, the world’s heaviest parrot, has reached a record high of 325 individuals after 90 chicks were added, marking the first time in 75 years it has exceeded 300. This surge follows a successful breeding season triggered by the abundant fruiting of native New Zealand trees, with the breeding cycle expected to repeat as soon as 2028. Recovery efforts began in 1995 after the species nearly went extinct due to introduced predators, with current populations situated on predator-free islands.
