MPs warn of soil microplastics threat to UK food
Microplastics from everyday plastic items, such as textiles and packaging, are increasingly contaminating UK soils, posing a threat to food security. A report highlights that agricultural soils are among Europe's most microplastic-polluted areas, mainly due to water treatment sludge used as fertilizer. Experts warn that microplastics impact soil health, affecting its structure, microbial communities, and fauna, with potential risks to crop growth and human health. The report calls for legally binding targets and measures to reduce microplastic pollution across the plastics lifecycle.
