Nimbys cannot halt Labour’s new town surge
New towns are set to become a significant part of Labour’s legacy, aiming to address the housing crisis, with Enfield as a key example. Despite opposition from local Conservative and Green parties, the regional and national authorities, including the London mayor, support the development of a 21,000-home new town in Enfield, on land currently used for golf courses and agricultural purposes. The plan faces protests over green belt loss, but officials emphasize that major infrastructure projects and housing developments are primarily driven by higher-level planning entities. The proposed development highlights the debate over balancing environmental preservation with the urgent need for affordable housing.
