Social Security earnings limits and calculations
Working while receiving Social Security benefits is permitted, but earnings below specific thresholds do not affect benefits. In 2026, individuals below full retirement age can earn up to $24,480 without benefit reductions, with earnings above this reducing benefits by $1 for every $2 earned. Earnings from employment and self-employment are counted, while pensions and investment income are excluded. Once full retirement age is reached, there is no earnings limit, and working can potentially increase future benefits based on higher earnings.
