Details on anti-plague worker’s death in Russia
Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old lab technician at an anti-plague research institute in Irkutsk, Russia, died shortly after falling ill at work. Official reports state she died of pneumonia of unknown origin, with some initial suggestions she might have had pneumonic plague, though Russian authorities deny any case of plague in Irkutsk. Experts note that while plague remains rare globally and treatable with antibiotics, concerns persist about potential laboratory exposure and the need for transparency and biosecurity measures.
