Calls increase for Princess Aiko to inherit throne
Public support in Japan is growing for allowing Princess Aiko, the 24-year-old daughter of Emperor Naruhito, to ascend the throne, challenging the country's longstanding male-only succession law. Despite her popularity and public backing, the current law prohibits women from becoming empress, with only male heirs eligible to inherit the throne. Efforts to change the law have been hindered by conservative officials, but rising demographic concerns and public opinion may prompt reconsideration.
