First witness to chimps' civil conflict
Primatologist John Mitani has studied the Ngogo chimpanzees in Uganda's Kibale National Park for over three decades, revealing significant discoveries about their social behavior and ecology. His team documented the lowest mortality rates and complex cooperative alliances among unrelated males. In 2015, they observed the first recorded "civil war" among wild chimp groups, leading to sustained violence and deaths, prompting Mitani to reflect on the darker aspects of primate behavior. Despite these challenges, ongoing research has contributed valuable insights while raising concerns over future funding and conservation efforts.
