Baghdad's Green Spaces Shrinking
Baghdad is facing a continual deterioration of its green spaces and historic date palm orchards, which have served as its natural lungs for centuries. There are ongoing deliberate efforts to clear and destroy agricultural lands, coupled with a rapid conversion of these farmlands into residential and informal neighborhoods due to previously weak security stability. This has resulted in urbanization and land clearing turning the area into thermal islands, exacerbated by urban expansion and deforestation. Satellite data and reports from independent organizations provide evidence of increasing water cut-offs for trees, intentional burning and land clearing, a decline in plant regrowth, and rising temperatures. Meanwhile, the government asserts that these land clearing activities are the result of past legacies and emphasizes efforts to prevent urban sprawl and improve the management of agricultural lands.
