Intl Org allocates $20M for Iraq climate efforts
A report from the World Food Programme (WFP) documents efforts to enhance climate adaptation in Iraq through a project funded with over $20 million from the Green Climate Fund. The initiative aims to support farming communities in facing water scarcity and changing climatic conditions. The program implementation began in the governorates of Dhi Qar, Basra, Diwaniyah, and Maysan, including the rehabilitation of agricultural lands, strengthening irrigation systems, and supporting farmers' livelihoods—particularly small landowners—to reduce the vulnerability of the agricultural sector. It also helps the government develop more effective social and food safety net systems. Additionally, the program focuses on training farmers, developing irrigation infrastructure, and implementing projects for environmental sustainability and economic resilience to address challenges posed by climate change. It targets over 8,000 individuals, providing training opportunities and projects to mitigate climate risks, amid worsening national finances and an oil supply crisis.
