Prisoner Hassan Salama reports harsh conditions
The Palestinian prisoner Hassan Salama, from the city of Khan Younis, revealed in a leaked message from inside the isolation section of Gilad University Prison the "very dire" conditions faced by isolated prisoners. He describes ongoing repression and repeated assaults, including searches and beaten attacks during transfers and lawyer visits. He also pointed out that the food supplies are minimal and barely sufficient, and that the time allowed for recreation does not exceed an hour in a confined, shaded space, with communication among isolated prisoners being cut off. Salama suffers from deteriorating health, as he has had ongoing diarrhea for a year, requiring examinations and treatment that have not yet been provided. Additionally, he needs glasses and dental care, but prison authorities repeatedly neglect his medical condition. It is noted that Salama has been detained since 1996 and sentenced to 47 consecutive life imprisonments. The suffering of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons has worsened; since the Gaza war began in October 2023, the number of detainees has increased by 83% to more than 9,600 prisoners, according to Palestinian human rights organizations.
