Colombia Reopens Jerusalem Embassy
The elected Colombian president, Abelardo De La Espriella, announced his government's intention to reopen the country's embassy in occupied Jerusalem, marking a significant shift in its foreign policy. Additionally, the government has decided to close several embassies and consulates, including those in Algeria, Cuba, and Nicaragua, as part of a plan to streamline diplomatic expenditures. It emphasized that closing some of these embassies does not mean severing diplomatic relations, with the exception of Cuba and Nicaragua. This decision comes amid a rapprochement with Israel, as the Israeli government announced the appointment of a new ambassador to Colombia, prompting criticism from former President Gustavo Petro, who argued that restoring relations strengthens Israel's position and supports its policies against Palestinians, especially in Gaza. This shift reflects a new direction in Colombia’s international relations, as the country seeks to bolster its ties with Israel and reopen its embassy in occupied Jerusalem, despite regional and international opposition.
