George H. W. Bush: From Pilot to President
The article discusses an incident from World War II, specifically during the Pacific Campaign in 1944, when American Lieutenant George Herbert Walker Bush led a mission against Japanese forces on Iwo Jima. During the operation, his plane was damaged by enemy gunfire, causing it to catch fire and forcing him to bail out with a parachute. The radioman and gunner accompanying him were killed in the crash, while Bush survived after being rescued by an American submarine, becoming the sole survivor of nine airmen shot down during the mission. After the war, horrific war crimes were committed against American prisoners, including executions and the gruesome act of cannibalism involving parts of their bodies. These atrocities are among the worst war crimes in history and remained secret for decades before being revealed in 2003. Bush was unaware of the fate of his comrades for years, and his life ultimately became defined by memories of the war tragedy and his later rise to the U.S. presidency.
