UN experts urge Iran to end death sentences for youths
UN experts condemned the death sentences issued against 12 young men in Iran over January’s protests, with two of them already executed. They affirmed that secret trials and unclear charges violate justice standards, noting that some individuals have faced enforced disappearance and abuse. Iran is considered one of the largest executioners globally, having carried out at least 1,639 executions in 2025—an all-time high since 1989—amid a widespread crackdown that has resulted in thousands of deaths, according to human rights organizations.
