Jordanian summer's hidden expatriate economy
The Jordanian economy heavily relies on the summer season of expatriate returnees, as they contribute through direct spending that impacts commerce, tourism, services, and real estate. Their remittances, which reached $2.06 billion during the first five months of 2026—a 14.5% increase—reflect their economic strength and their ability to stimulate local demand when visiting. Expatriates spend on accommodation, transportation, shopping, dining, and home maintenance, creating a wide range of economic activities and fueling the money circulation within the market, known as the multiplier effect. Despite the importance of their contribution, there is no clear strategic plan to sustain this economic season; it is suggested to launch incentive programs and foster cooperation between the public and private sectors to turn these visits into a permanent economic driver.
