Half of England declares drought restrictions
The British authorities have announced a drought situation in half of England's regions, due to a sharp decline in rainfall and the depletion of rivers and reservoirs. July 2026 is expected to be the driest since records began. Rainfall in July so far has amounted to only 7% of the normal rate, with some southern areas experiencing a decrease as low as 1%. These conditions have led to a 78% reduction in water levels in rivers, a decrease in water reservoir capacity to 75.3%, and water companies have imposed usage restrictions on 23 million consumers. It is worth noting that this is the third heatwave in five years, increasing the risk of wildfires and long-term impacts on the environment and economy. In June, Britain recorded a record temperature of 38 degrees Celsius amid a heatwave sweeping across Europe, causing wildfires and natural disasters.
