49,000 Migrants Crossed Morocco to Spain Last Night
Spain has witnessed a significant increase in attempts by Moroccan migrants to reach the enclave of Ceuta, with approximately 49,000 migrants crossing last night. These efforts resulted in the death of 18 people, including the drowning of thirteen while trying to cross the sea. In response, Spanish authorities sent reinforcements to enhance security in Ceuta, following a collapse in monitoring measures and a surge in migrant numbers, amid calls from local officials for assistance after the deteriorating situation. The Spanish Supreme Court ruled that migrants apprehended at sea cannot be returned to Morocco, further escalating the crisis. Italy is considering exceptional measures such as suspending the Schengen Agreement. The flow of migrants continues to increase, with attempts to climb down steep slopes and swim around the border pier amid accusations that human trafficking networks are exploiting the crisis.
