A young Syrian man named Mohammad Ghmaira passed away after being detained at the Al-Haffa police station in Latakia Governorate. His death comes amidst allegations that he was beaten during his detention, despite suffering from a chronic brain condition (bleeding disorder). His health deteriorated several days after his arrest, leading to a brain hemorrhage that required hospitalization. When he was admitted, his condition was stable. The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the formation of a high-level investigation committee headed by the Deputy Minister of Interior, and detained seven police officers to review the circumstances surrounding his death. This incident occurs amid widespread anger in Syria over torture practices in detention centers, with authorities pledging accountability for those responsible once the investigations are complete.
