Aqaba Transshipment Growth Strains Ports
Transit activity through Aqaba Port experienced a record-breaking growth in 2026, with transshipment containers increasing from 30,763 containers in the first seven months of 2025 to 80,235 containers in the same period of 2026, representing a growth rate of 160.8%. notably, transshipment containers heading to Iraq saw a remarkable surge from 3,599 to 37,182 containers, an increase of 933.1%. This growth indicates heightened confidence in Aqaba Port and presents an opportunity to enhance its competitiveness and expand its infrastructure. To accommodate the rising demand, new storage yards need to be established, and current spaces expanded. Additionally, there is a necessity to develop an integrated logistics system that includes warehousing areas and railway networks to support the increasing movement of cargo and land transport.
