The House of Representatives approved the Local Government Draft Law for the year 2026, which aims to enhance local governance, expand participation and accountability, and improve the quality of services provided to citizens. The law includes amendments related to the formation of municipal councils and governorate councils, the powers of municipalities, and the selection of municipality directors from the best candidates based on efficiency and transparency criteria. It also regulates the travel of council presidents and members for official missions or training courses. The law seeks to transition municipalities from their traditional service-oriented role to a broader developmental and investment role, with a clear delineation of roles and responsibilities between councils and executive bodies. It maintains the direct election of council presidents and requires regular reporting to increase transparency and ensure a high quality of service for citizens.
