Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro pledged to expand prison capacities in Brazil, highlighting the need to create more than half a million additional spaces in correctional facilities to address lawlessness. He based this on the Salvadoran government model led by Néstor Bokella, which contributed to reducing crime rates to historic lows. However, this approach has faced widespread criticism from human rights organizations due to instances of arbitrary detention and the declaration of a state of emergency. These statements come as the first round of the presidential election approaches on October 4, with security and crime reduction emerging as key issues in the candidates' campaigns.
