The expanded espionage law in South Korea has come into effect to now cover all foreign countries, after previously focusing solely on espionage in favor of North Korea. The amendment aims to enhance the country’s ability to protect its strategic technologies, particularly in the semiconductor, energy, and artificial intelligence sectors, from leaks and technological espionage. Acts related to spying for foreign countries or similar organizations are now punishable by imprisonment for at least three years, while existing sentences for espionage in favor of an "hostile state" remain in place. This amendment follows an increase in cases involving the leakage of sensitive technologies, such as the transfer of RAM technology from Samsung to a Chinese company, and is believed to strengthen deterrence and promote justice in the fight against industrial and technological espionage.
