Congress urges Rubio to release Dr. Abu Safiya
Members of the U.S. Congress, led by Representatives Maxine Dexter and Raul Ruiz, have called on the Israeli government to immediately release Palestinian doctor Hossam Abu Safiya, who has been detained for more than 500 days without trial or formal charges. They expressed concern over his deteriorating health, noting that he has lost about 20 kilograms and has been subjected to physical abuse and deprivation of essential medications, in addition to suffering from scabies. Reports indicated that Abu Safiya is experiencing bruising and difficulty remaining conscious, prompting international and Israeli calls for his release and urgent medical care. Abu Safiya, a pediatrician and hospital director in Gaza, documented the collapse of the healthcare system in the territory during his detention and continued providing care despite the challenges, especially after his son was killed and he was wounded during the war on Gaza.
