Amman Uses Tech to Reduce Smoking
The Greater Amman Municipality has launched a new plan for the years 2026–2028 to combat smoking through the use of smart technologies. This includes developing an electronic system to monitor violations and installing smart smoke sensors, with the aim of promoting a smoke-free environment in the capital. The plan follows a review of awareness programs carried out during the first eight months of 2026, during which 639 lectures and sessions were held, benefiting more than 25,000 people. Several digital awareness campaigns also reached over 159,000 views and 61,000 users. Additionally, inspection teams conducted 253 inspection visits, resulting in 71 violations recorded and 36 warnings issued. Smoking cessation clinics saw 1,550 visitors during the same period, 418 of whom successfully quit smoking altogether, bringing the total number of people who have quit to more than 2,177 since their establishment. The municipality is collaborating with the "Vital Strategies" organization as part of the "Amman Smoke-Free" initiative to expand oversight, awareness, and medical support, with a plan to further rely on modern technologies to achieve this goal.
