Al-Rashed assails rival
Saudi commentator Abdulrahman Al-Rashed lashed out at Emirati academic Abdulkhaleq Abdullah after Abdullah reposted an excerpt from an article by Mohamed Qawwas. The excerpt interpreted Al-Rashed’s praise of Al Jazeera and his remarks about Saudi Arabia’s challenges as potentially paving the way for political shifts. Al-Rashed said his praise came in the context of comparing the channel today with its previous phase, when he accused it of siding with Iran, Hezbollah and the Houthis. He added that, in his view, Al Jazeera had let go of half its staff and was trying to offer more balanced coverage, and that its direct competitor was Al Araby, not Al Arabiya. Abdullah responded that he had faithfully shared what Qawwas wrote and had added no comment. He said he respected Al-Rashed and urged him to direct his objection to the article’s author. The exchange followed Al-Rashed’s appearance on the “Socrates” podcast on October 27.
