MPs Malik al-Tahrawi and Rania Abu Rumman won the two assistant-speaker posts in Jordan’s House of Representatives, receiving 84 and 70 votes, respectively, in elections held Tuesday to complete the formation of the Permanent Bureau. Najma al-Hawawsha received 44 votes and Ayat Bani Issa received 26, while one ballot was invalid. The House’s rules require at least one woman to serve on the Permanent Bureau. If no woman is elected Speaker or deputy speaker, only women MPs may run for one of the assistant-speaker posts.
