Lebanon as a test case in US-Israel talks
The article discusses the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which is seen as a test of the American administration's stance towards Israeli policies in southern Lebanon and the Iran issue, amid expectations of escalating tensions. The report focuses on Trump’s attempt to pressure Netanyahu to withdraw from southern Lebanon and to achieve understandings that could dismantle the Iranian track, but Netanyahu strongly opposes this, especially due to election pressures and security threats. It also notes that ongoing Israeli violations of the ceasefire and their escalation complicate the situation, and that the meeting holds importance in determining how much Washington can exert real pressure on Israel to halt its expansion in border areas. The outcomes of this meeting are considered to be contingent on Netanyahu’s electoral considerations and security calculations, with Lebanese parties closely monitoring Washington’s stance ahead of the upcoming negotiations in Rome regarding the stabilization of the ceasefire and expansion of the concerned areas.
